Question Blocks

Edited

Question Blocks let you group related questions together to (1) apply logic at the group level and/or (2) randomize or rotate sets of questions for respondents. They’re an essential tool for concept testing, monadic designs, and other projects where not every respondent should see every question.

What Are Question Blocks?

A Question Block is a grouping of consecutive questions that functions as a single, programmable unit within your survey.

Use blocks to:

  • Randomize or rotate sets of questions.

  • Show only a subset of question groups to different respondents.

  • Apply logic or filters to an entire section rather than to each individual question.

This helps streamline programming, maintain consistency, and reduce error – especially in multi-concept or multi-cell designs.

Application Examples:

  • Display only 2 of 4 survey modules for which respondents qualify in random order.

  • Reduce order effects by randomizing a series of questions (i.e. randomly rotate Q10, 11, 12, and 13).

  • Diplay a set of questions only to those for whom it is relevant (i.e., display Q10 - 20 only to category users).

Creating a Question Block

To create a block, go to the Questions tab within the Build Survey section and click the Add Question Block button.

A pop-up will appear where you’ll enter:

  • Title – The name of your block (e.g., “Concept Set A”).

  • First Question Number – The starting question in your block.

  • Last Question Number – The ending question in your block.

Important things to remember:

  • Blocks must contain consecutive questions

  • You cannot include questions that have other items in between them.

  • Additionally, blocks cannot start or end the survey - make sure you have at least one question or text element before and after.

Once you’ve entered the block details, click Save Block to create it.

Display Logic for Blocks

Below the block setup fields, you’ll see a checkbox labeled Display Logic.

If checked, a pop-up appears that allows you to define when this block should appear based on question logic. You can specify:

  • The question number driving the condition.

  • The response option that triggers inclusion.

  • Logical connectors (AND / OR) to build more complex criteria.

This means you can control block visibility for specific respondent segments (for example, “Show this block only to people who selected ‘Yes’ on Q3 and are under 35”).

Randomization and X of Y Settings

You’ll also see a checkbox labeled Include Block in X of Y.

  • Use this only when you want to show respondents a random subset of question blocks.

  • For example, if you’ve created 4 concept blocks but only want each respondent to see 2, check this box for all applicable blocks.

When you later set your Display X of Y rule, only blocks with this box checked will be included in the random selection.

There is only one set of randomization available - you cannot select 2 of these 4 blocks and 1 of 3 of these other blocks. It’s all or nothing!

How Blocks Appear in the Question List

Once your blocks are created, you’ll notice a visual update in the left-hand sidebar of the Build Survey page:

  • Block Names remain left-aligned.

  • Questions within a block appear slightly indented beneath the block title for easy scanning.

  • You can click a block name to collapse or expand all questions inside it — a helpful way to simplify your view as you work through longer surveys.

Editing or Deleting Blocks

You can edit or delete blocks at any time:

  • Edit: Update titles, change start/end questions, or modify display logic.

  • Delete: Removes the block grouping but keeps all individual questions intact.

Remember that if you add or move questions, you may need to adjust block definitions to keep them consecutive.
