Open End Responses
There are several ways to view and export open-ended responses in the Glass platform, depending on how much detail you need.
View in Platform
In the Analyze Results tab, click the Analytics icon on the left side. From here, scroll down to the specific open-end question number. You’ll see each Respondent ID alongside their typed response, allowing you to quickly skim through and get a high-level sense of themes or tone.
Pro Tip: This is the fastest way to get a quick read on open-end feedback without running any downloads or exports.
Export from Summary Reports
If you’d like to analyze responses in more depth, head to the Summary Reports icon (also in Analyze Results). Select Raw Data Export, then click the Export button. This file includes all individual respondent-level data, allowing you to sort, filter, or search open ends in Excel, SPSS, or your preferred analysis tool.
Export from Crosstabs
Open ends are also included in the Crosstab Export for convenience. Go to the Build Crosstab icon and use the Crosstab Configuration button at the top. You’ll see a checkbox labeled “Include Free Text Tab”, which is turned on by default.
If you’re working with a very large dataset and want to reduce file size, you can uncheck this box to exclude open-end text.
When you download and open the Crosstab file, look for the Free Text Responses tab at the bottom. Each respondent will appear in their own row, with their open-end answers displayed by question.
Pro Tip: For more detail on using Crosstabs, see information here.
